Baby Steps Is All It Takes

When I lived in Japan, a friend of mine suggested that we climb the 3,776-meter-high Mt. Fuji. It was August, the last month of the climbing season. We happened to choose a Friday. That meant, after a full week of work and at the end of a hectic day, we would begin our ascent and climb through the night. The goal was to watch the sunrise from the summit of Fujisan and to have a spiritual, Zen-like experience. I wasn't even close to being prepared for this hike that I naively embarked upon. Though I did wear a good pair of hiking shoes and packed a rain poncho...nothing prepared me for walking uphill into a thinning supply of air. I had never experienced high altitudes before, much less climbed in it. I would take a little step and try to fill my lungs with much-needed oxygen. I was mesmerized by the people who could stroll like they were next to the ocean and 20+ years older.
At one point in the journey, I could be found curled up in the fetal position on some rocks, underneath the thin protection of my poncho trying to catch a quick nap in the drizzling rain. I had the choice to turn around and go back down the path from which I came, but I was determined to complete this “it-started-out-a-good-idea” endeavor. My body would simply have to rise to my level of determination.
Apparently, it would take a typical hiker 5 - 8 hours to ascend. I managed to turn into an all-nighter (12 hours). I did finally make it to the pinnacle. Barely. I plopped down at sunrise, only to discover it was a cloudy day! No beautiful sunrise view. No Zen moment.
Six months later, I received a New Year calendar from a client. As I prepared to hang it in my office, I noticed that January displayed a beautiful picture of Mt. Fuji in all its majesty. I thought to myself, “Hey, I know you!”
I sat down and contemplated my experience on Fujisan—the pain, the challenge, the never giving up…then it hit me.
Even though I took baby steps all the way -- I did actually make it to the top! Indeed that was when I had my Zen moment:
Even baby steps will get me where I dream of being.
I share that message with you because while you may want to journey faster, transform quicker, and experience your light overnight (some people do), for most of us, taking baby steps is all we need.
